1. Low Pulsation Chip Pump for Disposable Flow Cytometry

This is a conceptual model of a disposable flow cytometer, in which a sample flow pump, two sheath flow pumps, and a flow cell are incorporated onto a single PDMS chip. The chip can be easily replaced for each fluid. Pulsations, which are the drawback of conventional peristaltic pumps, are greatly reduced to a level acceptable for a flow cytometer or a cell sorter.

2. Reagent-prefillable Disposable Fluidic Systems

(1) Peristaltic Type, (2) Syringe Type

These systems integrate every liquid handling process necessary for analytical instruments into a single disposable chip. Once a chip prefilled with a reagent is loaded on the system, the pump discharges the reagent from the reservoir and draws a sample into the chip from the sample-in port to mix them together. The chip has another closed reservoir for waste, simplifying disposal of chemicals. Time-consuming tasks are eliminated. Two types of pumps are available; (1) Peristaltic Type and (2) Syringe Type. Customisation is possible to match your requirements.

Beer-Brewing on the Moon Project

Takasago Fluidic Systems is now the official sponsor for Team Original Gravity. Team Original Gravity is a project team by UCSD (University of California, San Diego) students, who are challenging to brew beer on the moon for the first time in history.

Takasago Fluidic Systems supplies pumps and valves for the brewing device that will be used on the moon. The device held by the project leader on the right is the actual brewing device, and what our engineer, standing in the middle, holds is the ultra-small pump for the device.

This project is one of activities by Team SYNERGY MOON, one of the teams competing for the Google Lunar XPrize, an unprecedented competition between privately funded robotic spacecraft on the moon. The brewing device will be launched to the moon in December 2017.

1. Live Cell Imaging Fluidic System (Debut)

 

 

This is a fully-automated medium and reagent pipetting system for live cell imaging. It is easily programmable from rapid medium exchange to gentle perfusion. Researchers can simply press “Start” to begin automatic pipetting and focus entirely on the observation of cells.

 

 

 

 

2. Portable Medium Exchange System (Recently Launched)

 

 

This system automates the conventional pipetting processes of feeding in and pumping out cell culture medium, which helps reduce your workload during weekends and holidays, and also minimizes the variability between operators.

 

 

 

 

3. 3D Perfusion Culture System

 


Conventional perfusion methods use basically the same structure as static cultivation and just replace a medium slowly and continuously, where the flow of the medium only passes over the layer of cells. Our new system utiliszes cell culture inserts and enables 3-dimensional perfusion that can permeate through tissues or spheroids, making the culture closer to an in-vivo condition.

1. Miniature Low-cost Valve SMV Series (patented)

This valve is driven by a piece of shape-memory alloy, resulting in significant miniaturisation and cost reduction. It also meets requirements for POCT applications. By using the SMV series, we aim to achieve “1/10 the volume and 1/2 the price” for fluid control modules used in diagnostic instruments. A good example of this concept is an ultra-small dispensing module, which is formed by integrating four SMV valves and one miniature pump (see the picture above). It is so small that it can be mounted on a moving element.

2. Embeddable Disposable Pump – Chip Pump (patent pending)

A peristaltic pumping function is incorporated into a PDMS chip, where rollers rotate and compress a Ω-shaped channel to directly pump the liquid inside. The PDMS chip is replaceable and can be autoclaved. By adopting this pump in your fluidic chips, you can mix and stir two liquids on one chip, for example. If a reaction chamber is established inside a fluidic chip, reaction and detection are possible. A small light-weight motor is used for this pump, making it suitable for POCT devices.

Useful Fluidic Items for MicroTAS & Life Science

Special Campaign for
Miniature Low-cost Valves!

 

Takasago is developing a
tiny shape-memory-alloy-driven valve for microTAS applications like POCT, and
is going to launch mass-production next year, which we believe will contribute
to a significant cost reduction. The price for this valve is expected to be at

This
unit includes a piezoelectric micro pump and a micro needle valve, which allows
you to manually adjust the flow from the level of nl/min to around 1.5 ml/min,
and drastically reduces flow pulsations at low flow rates. As it can be used as
a standalone unit powered by AAA or R03 batteries, it is suitable for circulating
cell culture media inside a thermostatic chamber or pumping liquids into
microfluidic chips under a microscope. Its dimensions are a compact 66 x 25 x 105 mm.

2. Remote Control Android Applications for Pen-Type Syringe Pumps or Micro Peristaltic Pumps

one of these applications, your Android device can easily control one of our
micro pumps that are placed, for instance, in a thermostatic chamber through
its wireless function.

This is so small that it can be installed on a
microscope stage. Outer dimensions of dia. 12 x L 153 mm (excluding the needle
and sensor case). Theoretical resolution is as small as 0.105 nl (at 1/100
micro-step).

RP-TX can achieve the low flow rate of 0.1 – 40 μl/min, and its built-in

1. Piezoelectric Micro Pumps and Various Fluidic Controls

The Piezoelectric Micro Pump is a product that is currently gathering a great amount of attention. The SMDP 302/306 standard model is small-sized, slim (25 × 25 × 4.8 mm) and lightweight (approximately 4 g) in comparison to motor-driven pumps. The flow rate can be easily adjusted by changing drive voltage or drive frequency. 1) Piezoelectric Micro Pump Remote Control Android Application

This Android application is for the remote control of Takasago piezoelectric micro pumps. Your Android device wirelessly connects to a microcomputer, allowing you to easily switch it on/off and adjust the drive voltage and drive frequency. This controls the flow rate. Using this application, it is possible to remotely control the flow rate of a pump put inside a thermostatic chamber.

2) Flow Control System for Piezoelectric Micro Pump

This flow control system automatically controls a flow rate by just setting a target flow rate by turning the control knob while checking the monitor. Even when the liquid levels of the vessels change, the flow rate remains stable. The system supports a wide range of flow rates from a few μ/min to a few tens of ml/min through the selection of a suitable pump and flow sensor. At µTAS 2012, we will demonstrate the prototype of this system.

 

In addition to the above, we will exhibit a Low Pulsation Micro Pump Module. This is a module to manually adjust the flow rate of a piezoelectric micro pump to the μl/min level using a micro needle valve. At the booth, we will demonstrate the output flow from the module using a micro flowmeter.

 

2. Valveless Piezoelectric Micro Pump

This piezoelectric pump has an entirely new structure that does not incorporate any check valves. It utilizes a unique internal flow path that has different flow resistances in the forward and backward directions. This simple structure is expected to contribute to mass-production at low cost. It is also suitable for integrating into a chip.

 

3. Electro-osmotic Pump

This is a small and ultra-lightweight pump that has no pulsation and moves the liquid using the electro-osmotic phenomenon. The pump can theoretically be designed to support a pressure of around 2 MPa. It is used for delivering water, methanol or ethanol. Although it is not currently on sale, we will start providing it for R&D purposes in the near future. Because of its unique features, the Electro-osmotic Pump potentially has many applications, such as an on-chip pump, miniature pump unit for a potable HPLC, etc. At µTAS 2012, we will exhibit a pico-pipette system as one application example. We will also demonstrate a basic model of this pump delivering liquid.

 

 

In addition to the above exhibits, we will show various products including a pen-type syringe pump and ultra-small chemically inert diaphragm valves, etc., which may contribute to your µTAS applications.

Rapid evaluation manifold prototypes would be ready for you as quickly as in a week – a huge reduction in lead time from the regular delivery time of 40 days. This service will be a strong support for you to optimise a manifold unit configuration or to accelerate your R&D process.

The page of non-diaphragm valves updated

The page of non-diaphragm valves is newly updated.

The structure of the non-diaphragm valve is such that the fluid comes into contact with the actuator part (solenoid). Compared to diaphragm solenoid valves, it has some charactristics, for example, a higher pressure resistance by making use of the fluid pressure, a reduced pumping volume and an improved response time, etc.

What is ” TAKASAGO”

whatisTakasago.jpgTakasago is originally the name of a place. The city of Takasago is about 80km west of our ancient capital, Kyoto. It is said that there was an old pine tree in Takasago and that the spirit of that pine tree was the spouse of another pine tree.
Based on this myth, an ancient Japanese play called Noh was written approximately 600 years ago. The story was about a couple of pine tree spirits who lived a long and happy life together. This Noh, titled Takasago, was very popular and influenced other aspects of Japanese culture. For instance, it was a common custom to sing a song taken from Takasago at wedding ceremonies and the custom still exists today. “Takasago” is supposed to be a happy word and this is why many Japanese shops, restaurants, and companies use the name Takasago. This is particularly true in the wedding industry.

About the Great East Japan Earthquake (2nd Report)

 We express deep condolences for victims of the earthquake and sincerely hope for the earliest possible recovery in all regions involved.

 

 We have been operating our production as usual since we announced the 1st report dated 15 March. However, since some of the raw material manufacturers have been damaged by the disaster, we are facing difficulties in procuring the below materials or parts. At the moment, we are continuing our production but in the near future we will be obliged to consider switching to replacements. When a concrete replacement and time have been decided, we will inform applicable customers individually. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

About the Major Earthquake in Northeastern Japan

We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy for the people who are suffering due to the earthquake in northeastern Japan.

 

Since Takasago is located in Nagoya, which is far away from the epicenter, our factory has not been damaged at all and our employees and their family are safe. We are doing business as usual.

 

However, it is reported that some of our suppliers have been affected by this earthquake. There is a possibility that we could face problems in the supply of parts/materials, which may in turn influence the supply of our products to our customers. At μTAS 2010 (the Fourteenth International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences) held 3-7 October 2010 at the Martiniplaza Congress Center in Groningen, The Netherlands, we will be exhibiting a range of miniature valves, pumps and various chips suitable for micro-scale fluid control. 1. Experimental System (Demo Unit) for the Easy Computational Control of Fluid Flow to an Analytical Chip
This experimental system enables the easy computational control of microlitre quantities of fluid within an analytical chip, by using ultra-small syringe pumps (outer dimensions: Dia. 8.8 mm x L 83.9 mm) and miniature inert valves. The computational control is performed using the program, “LabVIEW” by National Instruments, which is graphically intuitive. We believe that this demonstration will prove a good example of the technical service our company can offer, especially to customers who are considering adopting an experimental system that requires microfluidic control.

2. Ultra-Small Glass Syringe Pump (“Pen Type” Glass Syringe Pump)

Glass is newly incorporated as the barrel of the pen type syringe pump line-up, which has up until now been made of acrylic (PMMA). This new type is a pen-size and lightweight syringe pump of only dia. 8.8mm and 33 g. Such features make it most suitable for installation on moving parts, portable systems, in situ analytical instruments, etc. Its syringe capacity is 100 microlitres. This pen type syringe pump is used in the above demonstration unit. In addition to the needle model, a No.6-40UNF threaded port model and a special attachment model to connect with our small 3-way valve are also available.

3. Solenoid-driven Slider Valve

The solenoid-driven slider valve is a kind of shear valve in which a shutter called a “slider” moves vertically and shuts off the flow path. The pumping volume which occurs when a diaphragm valve opens and closes, or the dead volume in which some fluid may stay is reduced to almost zero to prevent reduction of accuracy in analysis or fluid dispensation. Furthermore, the pressure capability of this slider valve is greatly improved, and it can be utilised as a sample injector.

  4. Inert Piezoelectric Micro Pump

The feature of excellent chemical resistance has been added to our piezoelectric pump line-up. The new APP series uses only PEEK and perfluoroelastomer as its wetted materials. This chemical resistance expands the possible usages of piezoelectric micro pumps. Whilst being small-sized, lightweight and slim (33 x 33 x 9 mm, approx. 18 g), it can still provide an approximate flow rate of 20 ml/min and is self-priming. The flow rate is adjustable by changing drive voltage or drive frequency. This pump is best suited to pumping chemical liquids etc. for instruments in the fields such as analytical chemistry, clinical diagnostics, etc.

 5. Diaphragm Proportional valve

We have developed a diaphragm isolated proportional solenoid valve for chemical liquids, the wetted materials of which isare PTFE only. It has a comparatively large orifice diameter of 4 mm, which can cover a wide range of flow rates. It can control the flow rate in proportion to the input voltage. You may wish to consider employing this valve in an automated flow rate control system linked to the feedback signal from a flow meter.

Pittcon 2010 Report

 At Pittcon 2010, March. 1-4, New Munich Trade Fair Centre, Munich, Germany, we exhibited our products including our inert piezoelectric micro pumps that has been under development using a subsidy from the Japanese government.

 

The main field where the visitors are working is Chemical Analysis. However, it varies as follows;
Life Sciences/Biotechnology, Instrument Design & Development, Clinical Diagnostics, Micro Tas and Others.

 

Most visitors showed their interests in our piezoelectric micro pumps. Some of visitors who handle aggressive liquids were interested in the inert piezoelectric micro pumps. 

We intend to complete this inert piezoelectric micro pumps sometime this spring.

At LabAutomation2010, Jan. 23-27, Palm Springs, California, USA, we exhibited our products including our inert piezoelectric micro pump that hat has been under development using a subsidy from the Japanese government. In the exhibit hall, there were about 250 booths and there were many instrument manufacturers focusing on high-throughput equipment.

 

The fields where the visitors are working vary as follows;
Life Sciences/Biotechnology, Instrument Design & Development, Clinical Diagnostics, Oceanography/Marine Science, Chemical Analysis, Pharmaceuticals/Drug Discovery, MicroTAS and Others.

 

Most visitors showed their interests in our piezoelectric micro pumps. Some of visitors who handle aggressive liquids were interested in the inert piezoelectric micro pump.
For people handle aggressive liquids and requires high chemical inertness for the components, our inert piezoelectric micro pump seems to be best suited to these fields.
We intend to complete this inert piezoelectric micro pump sometie this spring.

As of today, 30 September 2009, we have partially opened Takasago’s renewed website to the public.
